Tales of our tiny family.

Trip to see Santa

We took Mary to see Santa.  After 45 min of waiting for Santa to feed his Raindeer Santa finally showed up at the mall.  Santa and I have the same camera.  So I decided I would just use mine.  Mary was super cute and smiled for me.  Although, I do wonder what she told Santa she wanted.  But I bet I could guess..she said, "I want this awfully uncomfortable bow off my head."  Because it only stayed on for as long as it took this photo to be taken.

Coolest Birthday Candle Ever

Kelly's Birthday cake with the candle.  The candle is the bright light in the middle.

I have to say I am more excited about this candle than I am about most things.  When I think of this candle I smile.  I'm serious.  It's the coolest candle ever!  And I found one for Jon's birthday. We are going to light it next Friday at his family birthday party.  I know all the kids will love it as much as I do.  And I want to video tape it to put up on this blog.  I first saw one of these candles in China.  My friend Kelly had a birthday and she invited me out to the country to celebrate with her family.  Her family bought this beautiful cake and in the center had this candle.  I had never seen a candle like it before.  It was a blooming flower.  In the center it had a firecracker that as it blew sparks a foot high in the air also lit several candles that were on each petals of the flower.  As it did this it also played Happy Birthday to you.  It continued to play happy birthday to you all night long.  I LOVED it.  My eyes widened and I told Kelly, "that is the coolest Birthday candle ever."  I had never seen anything like it before.  Kelly's mom, in true Chinese tradition, saw my love for the candle and went to the local bakery and bought one for me.  I thought they must be a fire hazard and would never be allowed to be sold in America.  In fact I was a little hesitant to take my firecracker birthday candle home on the airplane...I'm pretty sure you aren't suppose to take firecracker/explosive items on planes.  We used the candle I had received from Kelly for my father's birthday.  My mom invited around fifteen people and all in attendance loved the candle.  Flash back to this year.  I am bored waiting for some photos to finish at Smiths.  I was talking to a friend from my ward who was debating what chocolate chips to buy.  As I talked I lean on the isle across from the chocolate chips.  And hanging there is THIS CANDLE.  Right there at my local Smiths Market Place.  I stopped mid sentence and started telling everybody who would listen how cool they were.

Here is a link so you can see one in action

On the back of the package it had a website.  So here you go in case you want to buy one too.  http://www.magicalbirthdaycandle.com/

Mary's first snow day

It was fun to get out an enjoy the snow today.  We took Mary out sledding.  She wasn't as impressed as I had hoped she would be.  We kept telling her, "If you aren't having a good time we'll just have to stop doing fun things with you."  Kids today just don't understand the meaning of having a good time.  Jon and I had a blast.  It was like Jon was ten again.  He even didn't like to share with the other kids on the hill-since he had taken the time to make his path just perfect and in the optimal location.  We also pulled Mary around in the sled.  She mostly just lied there like a little rag doll.  But we thought it looked like fun.

Happy Thanksgiving

We spent Thanksgiving this year at Jon's parents house.  It was especially fun this year because we had three of his siblings and their families there also.  That made a grand total of 25 people in a little house.  But it makes for great memories and great fun.  I am always impressed that you can fit so many people into such a small area and not have any explosive arguements.  I guess my side of the family could work on that.  I remember quite a few hystraically funny little tiffs that happen at our family reunions.  And other than my twelve year old niece being pulled over on a four wheeler, nothing too remarkable happend.  Mary has been quite spoiled by the whole experience since whenever she cried she was instantly soothed.  Espcially at night.  I was worried of waking all 23 other people sleeping in the house.  I love to be around family at the holidays.

A new toy

I really wanted to buy Mary a walker but they were too expensive at the store.  But today I found one on ksl for $5.  She is still learning how to move around in it. Here are some photos.

Why We’re Not Going Private, Yet

The last two weeks seem to represent a wave of “privatization” going over the amateur family blogosphere. Lots of people have been posting about, and planning to make their personal blogs private. I think it’s a smart thing, and could potentially prevent problems. It’s smart to be cautious about what you put online, and anything that might endanger your family, or prevent you from gainful employment in the future is suspect. Because so many have decided to do this, we figured that we’d look dumb if we kept our blog open. Instead of taking affirmative steps to lock down our blog, I wrote this arduously long list detailing why we’re not going private…yet.

1. We try to avoid posting personal identifying information. We’ve tried to keep last names off the blog, phone numbers, addresses, and even emails are limited. This is not to say that a diligent searcher could not find our blog, but we try to limit the amount of very easily available information.

2. We try to limit discussing politics, religion, dietary habits, and medical views, as well as anything else that might potentially affect our friendship with others or my future employment. I can rant about these things on other pages with limited viewership and/or no identifying information. My blog that I write for my parents doesn’t need those kinds of things. Besides, if you write about a hot political/religious/dietary/medical topic, someone searching for information about that topic may run across your blog, see your view, strongly disagree, and then leave a nasty comment that will make you feel bad for a week.

3. We don’t really care about ex-boy/girlfriends who may stalk us. Come on in, have a look. I’m sure that our life doesn’t seem any more exciting than yours. In fact, because you can see how ordinary our life is, you probably care about us less, rather than more. Heck, if you feel like it leave a comment, we'll probably just feel more special.

4. Weirdos might stalk our family, it’s true. It’s something to worry about, but I’m not overly concerned. First, I feel confident that as the number of these types of family blogs has increased, the signal to noise ratio on the internet has made the odds that you will specifically be targeted lower. Second, even if a weirdo viewed our blog regularly, the odds that this would affect our lives in any meaningful way are lower still. Lastly, the weirdos that might look at your blog are more than likely people that you knew in a past life who are curious about you. As mentioned above, upon learning how tame our life is now, they will probably just get bored. Mystery is more exciting than bland reality.

5. We have lots of family and friends who may visit infrequently. I don’t want to keep an aunt, or second cousin, or long-lost high-school or college friend from having a chance to see what we’re up to. Anytime I run across a private blog, I am reluctant to ask for permission to view the blog, regardless of how well I know that person. I don’t want to bother them. I figure if they wanted me to see their blog, they would have already sent an invite. Private blogs are especially frustrating for people who aren’t regular followers of your blog, and may be uncomfortable asking for an invite. We don’t have huge viewership, but we like to let infrequent guests have a chance to catch up with us.

6. It helps to get more hits to Becky’s photography websites. She runs a blog at http://ravenbergphotography.blogspot.com and a website at http://slcphotobooth.com and we love to drive traffic to these sites so that we show up at a higher spot in the search engines.

There may come a day where something happens that will lead us to make our blog private. Until then, guests, licensees, and trespassers alike—enjoy. Here’s to knowing about our ordinary life.

P.S. This is in no way designed to offend those who have chosen to make their own blogs private. There are a lot of reasons to go private, and I’ve considered it a lot lately, which is precisely why I wrote this post.

Kisses from Mary

Here are a few photos of Jon and Mary.  I think Mary understands kisses, although, her's are very slobbery and open mouthed.  She hasn't gotten the perfect pucker down yet.  First we had Jon kiss her on her cheek. Very cute.  Second, Mary kissed Jon on his cheek.  Cute.  Then Jon was going to kiss her cheek again, but she turned her head and I got a photo of Mary kissing Jon, open mouth and all, right on the lips.  Wierd.  Actually it was really funny.  I put down the camera and we all laughed.  She doesn't understand that only Mommy is supposed to kiss daddy on the lips.  She thought it was funny too.  But seriously the photo is creepy so we decided not to post it.

Where did Mary go?

I left Mary to roll and scoot on the floor for one minute so I could text Jon on instant messenger.  When I looked back I couldn't see her, but I could hear baby laughter coming from my bedroom.  When I went back to find her I couldn't see her.  If you have ever seen the size of our bedroom you would know that it's hard to hid in such a tiny place.  I fallowed the baby laughter to under the bed.  She scotted so far that I had to get on my tummy and crawl myself to get her out.  She thought it was hysterical.

Mary at 6 months

These were taken two weeks ago before I babysat for Julie.  I can't believe that she has grown so much!

Considering China's "One Child Policy"

Hooray! We are back down to one child and she is asleep right now! It feels so nice-and I'm sure the other children are happy to be sleeping in their own beds. Our 650 foot apt was not meant for five children. We had a fun day yesterday. We took all of the children to the aquarium and then to eat at the Mayan. They loved the cliff divers. Here are some photos I took at the aquarium.

Watching the cousins

This week I'm up at my sister, Julie's, watching her four kids. Five children total. I've been very busy. Jon's classes were canceled thurs. and fri. so he was so sweet and came up to be with me. I truely appriciate him doing that. He also helped me with my photo blog. It has a completly new look. I love it! You should check it out at http://ravenbergphotography.blogspot.com/ Here is a photo of Mary with her cousin Abby.

On the Move

I took Mary to her six month visit yesterday and the Doctor was really impressed that she could scoot already. He told me that I need to be careful with her and to make sure that my house is baby proof. I'm trying to baby proof it which is proving to be difficult because I also have to chase my scooting baby around the house too. Here is a film strip of how fast she has become and she becomes even faster when she is being chased or about to play with something naughty--like computer cords.

Our Halloween Costumes Rocked

We had a ward Halloween party this last Saturday. We didn't really have any plans on what we were going to be. I tried to convince Jon to let us go as Chinese--but he said that it was very politically correct to do that. Mary had a bunny hat, but she refuses to wear it. And that still left Jon and I without costumes. So we decided to dress up as punk rockers. Well, Mary and I am punk rockers and Jon went for grunge rock. We got a few interesting looks as we showed up. And it took a bunch of Vaseline and elbow grease to get the mascara out of Mary's hair. But I'm glad we did something for her first Halloween!

Mary loves to look at herself

My mom found this awesome large mirror at a estate sale for $10 and Mary loves to look in it.

Mary's First Word--Stinky

Ah, sweet little Mary. It's hard to determine when the first word is said, because it can be somewhat hard to decipher, but with two distinct, reasonably clear replications, we feel that we can pronounce with some confidence that Mary's first word was "stinky."

Jon was out when I was changing the diaper, and I described the diaper as stinky. As Grandma Ravenberg is my witness, after I said "stinky" she said "tin-ky." My husband of little faith returned shortly afterward, and was reluctant to believe that Mary's first word could be so complicated, multisyllabic, and well, awesome. He tried to get her to replicate her speech from earlier, and (unlike the U of U experiment on cold fusion) it was successfully replicated. Again, Mary said "tinky."

She's getting around faster and faster, and she talks more and more, using several random vowel-consanant combinations. We're very proud of our "tinky" baby. Go Mary.

Family Photos

After watching confrence we decided to go out and take some more family photos. I love that Jon is so willing to help me with my hobbies. I truly am grateful. Here are some photos.

And of course Mary needed a diaper change during the most beautiful light!

Mary's Bath

Mary likes to do things by herself.  At the ripe age of almost 6 months she thinks she can take a bath all by herself.  She loves to play and splash.   I tried to keep her modest so she wouldn't be too embaressed by this video when she gets a little older. Here is a video.

Beijing Acrobats

My sister, Lori, has a friend whoes child is doing a report on China.  I thought little kids would think that the acrobats were pretty cool.  Since I looked up all these photos I decided to post them on here.  It's fun for me to remember being in China.  We were always so free to go and do whatever we wanted.  A big contrast to this year being parents and having Jon back in school.  I think this trip was taken on a whim...maybe only planned a few days before we went.  We all woke up and decided to see the acrobats.  A taxi ride and a few hours later we had done just that.  Now it's hard to get up, take care of the baby, and make it out to do anything.  Interesting how different phases of life are.  But don't get me wrong I LOVE being a mom!

Family Photos

Hi we took some family photos today.  I would like to get more hits on my photo blog so I'm posting most of them there.  Here is the link http://ravenbergphotography.blogspot.com/ But here is a sample of what they look like.

A few more pictures of us.

Here are a few pictures that we shot at different times in the last few days.

This is us on the way to regional conference at the conference center downtown. Mary is getting better about being able to ride on my shoulders. Mary was so cute that I think we may have even convinced a young couple to have a baby (based on a conversation we overheard).
We shot these pictures with the point-and-shoot at Sunnyside Park, which is a very short walk from our apartment. We waited until sunset so that the light would look a little warmer.

Mary is getting more and more mobile. I think that even today she made a huge step toward learning how to crawl. I'm pretty sure I'm not ready for that. She can't crawl "proper," but her army crawl/scoot has become much much more efficient. The basically throws herself forward 4-6 inches a shot. That doesn't sound very far, but she can get away from you pretty quickly at that rate.

Just as an aside, school is going well for me. I am enjoying things and staying afloat. It's certainly busy, but it's been a good experience. Sometime I'll have to write a long post about the whole experience, but I can't think of anything very interesting right now.

No more bouncy for Mary.

From birth till now I have put Mary in her bouncy chair while I took a shower. It worked out perfectly. I didn't like her too far away from me. And if she started to cry I could peek my head out and she would smile. Well, I can no longer leave her unattended in her bouncy. It started about a week ago. I heard her in the shower grunting for awhile. I then heard her laughing. I peeked from behind the curtain to see that she had grabbed the toilet paper end and pulled the whole roll off. I thought that was only a trick a two year old pulled...nope my five month old thought it was hilarious to be covered in TP. Then this week I was taking a shower and I peeked out and she didn't look at me. I kept saying, "Mary whatcha doing?" And I could tell she wanted to grab something that was on the floor and she refused to look at me. She had even sat up from her reclined position to look more closely at the object. It turned out to be the scrubbing bubbles bottle. It was out of reach but I can tell I will have to be more careful in the future. Then to my horror she lunged herself towards the bottle and almost tipped her whole chair over. She burst out crying and I hurried dripping wet to save her. I did think it was funny so I made her do it again--supervised! So I could get photos of it. Here they are.

Mary is eats solids!

So these are some snapshots of Mary eating solids.  I need to be better about giving them to her more regularly.  She usually eats rice cereal, but loved the yellow squash that Karen grew in her garden. Yummy!
